Do Not Run From The Truth
Jer 26:20-24 And there was also a man that prophesied in the name of the LORD, Urijah the son of Shemaiah of Kirjath-jearim, who prophesied against this city and against this land according to all the words of Jeremiah: (21) And when Jehoiakim the king, with all his mighty men, and all the princes, heard his words, the king sought to put him to death: but when Urijah heard it, he was afraid, and fled, and went into Egypt; (22) And Jehoiakim the king sent men into Egypt, namely, Elnathan the son of Achbor, and certain men with him into Egypt. (23) And they fetched forth Urijah out of Egypt, and brought him unto Jehoiakim the king; who slew him with the sword, and cast his dead body into the graves of the common people. (24) Nevertheless the hand of Ahikam the son of Shaphan was with Jeremiah, that they should not give him into the hand of the people to put him to death.
Jeremiah Chapter 26 shows two prophets speaking in the land of Judah. Both were delivering the same of Word of God and both were threatened with death. But the two men, Jeremiah and Urijah, reacted differently to the threats placed before them.
Jeremiah stood his ground, despite being in the minority. Jeremiah stood his ground, despite the priests and prophets speaking out against him (Jer. 26:, 11). Jeremiah stood alone as the religious authorities loomed over him. However, Jeremiah was not alone and he was not afraid of what man would do to him:
Jer 26:14-15 As for me, behold, I am in your hand: do with me as seemeth good and meet unto you. (15) But know ye for certain, that if ye put me to death, ye shall surely bring innocent blood upon yourselves, and upon this city, and upon the inhabitants thereof: for of a truth the LORD hath sent me unto you to speak all these words in your ears.
Urijah delivered the same truth, but when people reacted poorly and threatened him, he ran. And look at where he ran to: Egypt. Urijah did not have faith in the truth — he spoke it, but when things got rough, he did not trust in the source of the truth: God. Egypt is shown in the Bible as a type of the world. Urijah tried to hide in the world, but nothing remains hidden for long. Urijah spoke the truth, but when people threatened him, Urijah began to doubt the truth. Do not resurrect in doubt what you have buried in faith.
Jeremiah stood for the truth and God took care of him. Urijah ran and it cost him dearly.
